One year ago today, Jason & I were driven an hour outside of St. Petersburg Russia into the snowy countryside overlooking the Gulf of Finland to the town of Lomonosov where we met Pessi Roman Dmitriyevich, a shy & quiet & reserved & precious little 20 month old for the first time. We were nervously sitting on a couch in a playroom when the door opened and our tuxedo-clad son was carried into meet us. For an hour we played, observed his behavior, gained his trust, and got a few smiles & giggles out of him. The next day, we went back to the orphange and were thrilled when he recognized us. We gave him his "gift" - a plush photo album with pictures of his new house, new room, parents, family & friends. People often ask how we could bare to leave Roman in the orphanage for 6 weeks until we returned in February. A cranky temper-tantrum is the answer! It was a nice note to leave on!

We never knew his entire name. What a difference a year makes--no more tantrums, spiky blond hair, but the same mischievous smile!
